Excel 2003 Read Only

My new Excel 2003 keeps making all files Read Only even though it is
unchecked in Properties. How do I get rid of this?

Hello,

I am running Excel 2003 and I wish to apply conditional formatting to only cells with format Number. Does anyone knows an easy way of doing this or a VBA code for it?

I have tried on my own to write a code , but as I am new to VBA , I can't figure out how to make it work . The code supposed to compare all the numeric values from an uknown number of columns with numeric values from column B row by row and Bold the ones greater. The number of columns and rows is uknown because the data will be exported from another software to Excel , so bassically I wish to format a woorkbook to automatically do that.
The code is below:

	VB:

 ConvertsFontStyletoBold()

    Dim Count As Integer
    Dim Count1 As Integer
    Dim nr1 As Range
    Dim nr2 As Range
    Dim nr3 As Range
    Dim nr4 As Range
    Dim nr5 As Range
    Dim nr6 As Range
    Dim nr7 As Range
    Dim nr8 As Range

    Set nr1 = Range("A65536").End(xlUp)
    nr1.Select
    Set nr2 = Range("a1").End(xlToRight)
    nr2.Select
    Count = Range("A1", nr2).Columns.Count - 1
    Set nr3 = Range("A1", nr1.Offset(0, Count))
    nr3.Name = "Data"
    nr3.Select
    Set nr4 = Range("B65536").End(xlUp)
    nr4.Select
    Set nr5 = Range("B7", nr4)
    nr5.Select
    Set nr6 = Range("D7").End(xlToRight)
    nr6.Select
    Set nr7 = Range("D65536").End(xlUp)
    nr7.Select
    Count = Range("D7", nr6).Columns.Count - 1
    Set nr8 = Range("D7", nr7.Offset(0, Count))
    nr8.Name = "Values"
    nr8.Select

    For Each r In nr8.Rows
        i = r.Row
        r.Select
        If IsNumeric(Cells(r)) = True And r.xlCellValue > nr5.xlCellValue = True Then
            cell.Font.Bold = True
        End If

    Next r

End Sub

Thank you very much for any help received.

Good Thursday Afternoon,

When I type a decimal value into a cell in an Excel 2003 spreadsheet the
formula bar shows the value as a whole number ( not a decimal ) even though
the cell shows a decimal. Worse, calculations are preformed with the whole
number. I have tried changing cell formatting to General, Number and even
Custom but the value is still read as a whole number, not the decimal I typed
in. Any thoughts or help by those wiser than I would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

When we received a excel file through mail , while opening the file i
received a error :corrupt file, run repair to to extract the contents.

The same file when opened on another PC received an error : read only.

Hello All,

I have an information system that uses multiple Excel files with macros.
On many of the sheets, we have a combo box that enables the user to hide and
show certain informations.
Here is an exemple of the code behind on of the sheet and it's combo Epargne :

Private Sub Epargnes_Click()
CallByName ActiveSheet, ActiveSheet.Cells(1, 10).Value, VbMethod
End Sub

Sub épargnes_tout()
Unprotect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
Rows("1:100").Hidden = False ' Affiche toutes les lignes
Rows("15").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("21").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("27").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("33").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("39").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("45").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("57").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("41:46").Hidden = True ' Masque les Ã* déterminer
Protect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
End Sub

Sub épargnes_seul()
Unprotect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
Rows("1:100").Hidden = False ' Affiche toutes les lignes
Rows("15").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("21").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("27").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("33").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("39").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("45").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("57").Hidden = True ' Masque les lignes T12
Rows("47:51").Hidden = True ' Masque les comptes inactif
Rows("41:46").Hidden = True ' Masque les Ã* déterminer
Protect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
End Sub

Sub épargnes_compte()
Unprotect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
Protect ThisWorkbook.SIGPWD
End Sub

On excel's version prior to 2003, everything works find. The click event is
fired once when I chose an option of the combo and it then calls the
appropriate function.

On Excel 2003, the following error message occurs when I make a combo choice :

Run-Time error '1004' : Application-defined or object-defined error

and if I check the err.description, I get : Unable to set the Hidden
property of the range class.

The subs works well indepedently if I comment the event. On the debugger,
the difference between Excel 2003 and the other versions is that the event is
triggered multiple times in excel 2003 and only one time in the other
versions!

A simple solution is to use a boolean to know when to call the function
(only once) but we have over a 100 sheets similar at this one so that would
imply a lot of work. I'm currently trying to help someone who's installing
this in Madagascar... Is there anything else to do?

Thanks for your help

Richard

Excel will not allow me to add the add on Toolpak and it will not let me open a fiel from my flash drive saying it is read only. It says one of three things,
An unexpected error occurred while trying to load Microsoft Framework library.

'FuncRes' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

Analysis toolpak cannot be accessed the file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

What I have done to cause this and what I tried to do to fix it. I bought a used Macbook pro I changed the user account to my own name I was stupidly bothered by the short name being flower so used a program to change the short name. don't know if this did it but............

To fix it I have reinstalled Office twice once with just using the office uninstall program and once with the program and remove any remain thing that microsoft on it. And both times doing all the updates.

I have fixed privileges several times before and after. I am logged as administrator. I opened a new user and the same result. These functions work fine on my Intel Imac with the same files.

Hi

At work I use a very important excel spread sheet that provides process information on a 24 hour process. This sheet is opened by a large amount of users from around the works to gain information. The problem is sometimes other people open the sheet and if for some reason we have it closed down and they open it and forget to close it we cant save it. How do I set my sheet to only open on a specific terminal and on every other terminal open read only. Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I am trying to make a favorite entry that will launch an excel spreadsheet that will open it up read only. i am using office 2007

i know about the command line switch /r. as the file is not mine but is shared by others, i do not want to set IT to read only. and as a file admin i do not want to administer it by security permissions. any suggestions out there?

Here is the rundown of what happens in this project

1. The user opens the page
2. Fills out the required info
3. clicks on the command button 1 to save and print, this saves the file as the invoice # in a specific location
4. when they open the page again, it returns a sequential invoice #
5. they then must click on another button in order to make the saved client info disappear
6. once they do this, certain cells which are not for data entry will become protected
7. the process recycles at step 2

In Userform1 I have

Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
ActiveWorkbook.Save
Sheet1.SaveAs FileName:="Q:SALES POs" & Range("K5").Value
Range("A1:M56").PrintOut
ActiveWorkbook.Close

End Sub

In This Workbook I have

Private Sub Workbook_Open()

Sheet1.Unprotect
Range("F7").Select
Range("K3") = Now()
Range("K3").NumberFormat = "mmmm d, yyyy"
With Me.Sheets("Sheet1").Range("K5")
.Value = .Value + 1
.NumberFormat = "0000"
End With
UserForm2.Show

End Sub

In SHEET 1 I have

Private Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Range(" C9:D15,E15:F15,I9:L15,B19:B38,C19:C38,D19:D38,K39:

L40,K44:L44,D43:E43,C47:F49,K54:L54").ClearContents
Range(" C9:D15,E15:F15,I9:L15,B19:B38,C19:C38,K39:L40,K44:

L44,D43:E43,C47:F49,K54:L54").Select
Selection.Locked = False
Sheet1.Protect
Range("E8").Select
End Sub

What would be the code in order for this series of events to happen:

1. Person clicks on userform 1 in order to save the file to the "Q" location
2. The newly saved file becomes read only
3. The file is copied and pasted into "H:RETAIL SALES POs"

Beyond that, is there some type of way to make it so that the saved file in "Q" or "H" cannot be copied by someone manually and then pasted to another location where that person can change the information inside that saved sheet?

I think it sounds confusing but I don't think it has to be

Any ideas?

I've imported some MYOB general ledger reports into Excel, but have found
that Excel 2003 reads dates in the first 12 days of the month as MM/DD/YYYY
(USA format) when they are actually DD/MM/YYYY (i.e. European / Austalian /
NZ format), even though i have correctly set my Windows Regional settings to
Australia (i.e. DD/MM/YYYY).

Am really sick of having to scan sometimes 200 lines to fix these dates -
very annoying.

Excel 2000 doesn't make this boo-boo !

Is anyone at MS working on this URGENT problem ???

Have also reported this issue to MYOB Support in Melbourne.

Default OLAP Analysis Services access in Excel is read only pivot tables. Is
there a reasonably priced Excel add-in that allows MS OLAP Analysis Service
cube cell access via formulas (functions)? What I'm looking for is the way
Applix TM1 or Paris Technologies PowerOLAP works with "OLAPwrite" formulas
with their dedicated OLAP servers, but I want it to work with MS OLAP
Analysis Services. I am specifically looking for MS OLAP Analysis Services
Write Back to the cube to budget only scenarios while simultaneously
displaying Read Only Actuals. The pivot tables also have formatting problems
where the formulas retain formatting with no problems.

Hi,

I'm trying to put together a spreadsheet that will format the colour of a row based on a value in a data validation list.

The problem is that I am limited by excel 2003. It only allows 3 conditional formats. I need to have a selection of 5 - 8 colours for the different options in the data validation list in column F. If possible I also want to have a conditional format in place for column I. If "h" is selected then it overrides the conditional formatting directed in column F and turns the row a specific colour. Am I asking Excel 2003 to do too much?

I suspect that a VBA code might sort this out easily, but I know little about VBA. I already have a VBA date stamp code in this spreadsheet, so the VBA code will need to be added to and run alongside the existing code. I need something that is relatively people proof and will allow for the insertion of new rows of data within the spreadsheet and at the bottom of the spreadsheet.

Any help is much appreciated. I have attached my spreadsheet so far in excel 2003 format if it is any use.

Many Thanks In Advance,
Joel

Hi All,

Hope your all ok.
I have searched everywhere and cannot find an answer so hopefully you can help. Im quite new to VBA so im struggling a bit .

I have a spreadsheet that I need to update to to present weekly information, other users then have read only access so they can check for any updates. I need to log which users are looking at the sheet, to see if it is actually being used.

I have tried VBA such as
Private Sub Workbook_Open()
With Sheets("Log")
lastrow = .Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row + 1
.Cells(lastrow, 1) = Environ("Username")
.Cells(lastrow, 1).Offset(, 1).Value = Now
End With
ActiveWorkbook.Save
End Sub

Which does the job, but i cannot set the sheet as Read Only as it just saves another copy of the sheet.
Im looking for a way of recording who is going into the sheet (Read Only), so i was thinking, is there a way of tracking which user has clicked on the Read Only option and when they clicked (date time etc), the sheet is on a shared network and i dont have any authority access.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks
Slice

I know that Excel 97 limits workbooks to 255 worksheets but according to the
Help files, Excel 2003 is only limited by system memory/resources.

I created a little test jig that looped on the following statement:

activeSheet.copy , Worksheets("InitialSheet")

In my first test, the InitialSheet had 14 columns x 63 rows (880 cells), 5
command buttons and an image. In this test, I was able to produce 163
copies before Excel started complaining about not being able to find my temp
directory. My code monitored Application.MemoryUsed and it appears that
each worksheet used about 32.5k bytes.

In my second test, the InitialSheet had 14 columns x 63 rows (880 cells), 0
command buttons and no image. In this test, I was able to produce 267
copies before Excel died with an exception. In this case, each worksheets
appears to use about 16.1k bytes.

I also changed my code to only loop 100 times and then reran the code three
times to see if giving Excel a "breather" would help, but that didn't change
anything.

Does this limit "feel" right to people? It seems like I should be able to
have more worksheets than this. My system is running WinXP and Excel 2003
(both have all service packs and patches installed). The system has 512mb
of ram and a 768mb paging file.

TIA

Hi, I created a passwords to protect my worksheet. So not it can only be open as read-only. By everytime, it will pop-up a window asking me to key-in passwords or choose read-only. Is there a way to by-pass this and open as read-only each time?

Hi,
I'm having problems with the size of the Y-axis title. Excel 2003 will only
show half of the typed Y-axis title, when in chart options it displays the
entire title on the graph and also when I look at the chart in print
pre-view. However if I export the graph to Word or Powerpoint only half the
Y-axis title appears for any type of view. I am unable to change the size of
the title box and if I replace it with a text box I have thesame problem.

Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved

Cheers

Hi. Can anyone suggest a solution for this issue:

SYSTEM: Windows XP--Running Office Professional
PROBLEM: Excel 2000 .xls file comments are lost when Excel 2003 reads file.

.xls file saved in Excel 2000 (9.0.4402 SR-1) contains comments.
When this file is read by Excel 2003 (11.5612.5606), Excel 2003 displays message, “File error: data may have been lost.” The old-version .xls file then displays with its comments lost/dropped.

We've saved the Excel 2000 file as: (1) "Microsoft Excel Workbook (*.xls)"; (2) Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls)"; and (3) Microsoft Excel 97-2000 & 5.0/95 Workbook (*.xls)."

In each instance, Excel 2003 drops cell comment boxes.

Many thanks for prompt replies.

From one day to the next one I suddenly can't open a password-protected
Excel file anymore. After investigating this issue I found out that the
Excel file uses the encryption scheme "RC4, Microsoft Base Cryptographic
Provider v1.0". However for some strange reason this encryption scheme isn't
available any more in my Excel 2003. From all the encprytion schemes listed
at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/294414/en-us my Excel 2003 suddenly only
knows these anymore:

- XOR encrpytion
- Office 97/2000-compatible
- RC4, Microsoft Base DSS and Diffie-Hellman Cryptographic Provider
- RC4, Microsoft DH SChannel Cryptographic Provider
- RC4, Microsoft Enhanced DSS and Diffie-Hellman Cryptographic Provider

Another user on this laptop however has the full list of encryption schemes
available and can open the password-protected Excel file. Now how do I get
back the other encryption schemes?

Thanks in advance,
Boris

I have an xlt file thats read only.
I wish to edit it and save it as an xlt file and make it read only too.
(Not like, right-click go to properties and select Read-Only).

http://www.gcsensations.com/~kirby/TokenBook1.xlt

as You can see that its a .xlt file and its read-only.
I wish to change some values and keep it as a read-only .xlt file.

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/1334/45856493.png

I want to change the value in the blue box.
Item name: i_n_00045
Count: 200

If Excel 2003 is open and I double click an xls file in Explorer, it opens in a new instance of Excel. Very annoying. I can work around it by dragging and dropping the new file onto an open Excel file, causing it to open in the same instance. But this is cumbersome compared to double clicking.

I have seen posts elsewhere (though couldn't find them here) suggesting running
Excel.exe UnregServer
Excel.exe RegServer
but this has not helped. In Options/View - Windows in Taskbar is unchecked

Maybe it is something to do with having had a trial 2007 installed which I have tried to remove but keeps wanting to reinstall. Have been using 2003 since it came out and have never experienced this before.

Suggestions on how to persuade Excel 2003 to only open a single instance will be much appreciated.

I have a file i use daily. Today I went to open it and Excel returns a
dialogue box that says:

"filename.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored
on is not responding"

I also synchronnized this file on my other machines and they all return the
same error. I can open the file with notepad but it is text and chiberish.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Running XP SP2 and Office XP on some machines and Office 2003 on others.

It appears that all spreadsheets created in Excel 2007 that are saved in the
new XML format (xlsx) are opened as Read-Only files when opened on a machine
running an older version of Excel (Excel 2003) after the Office 2007
Compatibility Update has been applied to that machine. Is this a known issue?

My finance department uses Excel constantly. Three of them use 2003 and one uses 2007. Two of the Three using 2003 can open the 2007 files without a problem, the downloaded converter from Microsoft works well. The other one using 2003 doesn't work so well. Any Excel 2007 file that he opens, opens as read only, and the file name changes to Xl000000001. They all run Windows XP Professional SP3.

He can open Word 2007 files fine.

The only difference that I saw was the two had Office 2003 Professional and he had Standard, but I changed his to Professional with the same problem. I have logged on as different users on his computer....same problem.

I haven't been able to find a solution on this exact problem. Any help would be appreciated. I know it can be worked around, but I would like to find a solution.

Thank you,
