Hi
Very important accounting(which is 26 KB only) excel file is not allowing me to open the file. I may encrypted this worksheet and immediately turned into green colour, 6 months later i reinstalled windows XP pro but this time iwhen i try to open

First dialog box show that : Excel cannot access "file name". The document
may be read-only or encrypted.
Then second dialog box show up : Cannot access "file name".....
i tried openoffice.org but didnt solve the problem.I never used any password for this file.
I think this excel file ,when i choose the option to encrypt ,it got a certificate
from windows xp and when i reinstall it ,it can not reach the same certificate.
ANy idea how to open this important file ?you can write to me

Thanks in advance

I have a worksheet in which Excel does not allow me to change the alignment of a range of cells from, say, left-justified to centered.

I am experienced with Excel/VBA and have not seen this before. The cells are not protected and do contain numerical data. If I add a leading apostrophe to the cell values to have them treated as strings, I can then align the cells however I like. When those cells contain numerical data, Excel will not allow me to change the alignment from left-justified, regardless of whether I use a toolbar, the Format tab, or VBA.

Any ideas?

My computer had to be rebooted when I had an Excel file open. After
rebooting, when I tried to open the file, it has the file is open for
editing and does not allow me to open the file in normal mode. How do I set
the file to be closed, so I can open it normally?

Excel will not allow me to change a numerical figure in a specific cell.
I've tried deleting it & typing over it, but when the cursor is moved to the
next cell the original figure magically appears again.

Hi Everyone,

I have a large list of items in an excel spreadsheet. Some of the lists are grouped by rows and some of the cells are merged, etc. there is also some conditinoal formatting in the worksheet. The workbook is a "shared" workbook and is located on a network drive. Several people need to access the list and there comments into the worksheet. I unlocked certain cells where people will be imputting thier comments but Excel will not allow me to select "Protect Sheet" anyone have any clue as to why or how I can fix it?? Thanks, Zack

Hi
I have an Excel spreadsheet that I share with another local office. When I try and open it, it says that it is locked for editing by me when I know this is not the case.
Excel will not allow me to open the sheet unless its in read-only mode. The last time this occurred I solved it by saving the file under a new name, consequently I had to reset shortcuts for the six others who impute data onto the sheet.
Any assistance to help me to solve this would be appreciated.

Thanks & regards
Robert

Is it possible to allow users to view an Excel file via the web but NOT allow
them to save that file?
Thanks much.

Help! Don't understand My Permission in Excel. Even though I unrestrict, it
still doesn't allow me to Preview my documents. How do I reset?

Please Help,

I was wondering if its possible to create an excel macro that would allow me
to insert the content of a cell in excel into a webpage search bar. I would
like to create an icon within excel that when clicked on inserts the content
of a specific cell into a specific space inside a web page. Any help on this
matter would be greatly appreciated.

I need to group the data in a pivot table, why will it not allow me to?

was created by someone else. I can edit like add numbers and information.
But it will not allow me to edit the print area, I get only the WHite plus
sign(like) as a cursor not the usual cursor to drag and change the print
area.

Please help- Multiple rows make a single order and Pivot table

Hi all,
Enclosed is the sample file.

I hope some one can help me with this. I have a spreadsheet with order ID title and several rows collectively constitute one order (worksheet- Order received). I also have data that shows the order has been made using what mode - email, online etc (worksheet- order source). Can somebody tell me how do I make a pivot table using these two worksheet that shows which order has been made using email, online etc.

I did try to make. Since multiple rows make one order, I always get more number of order than actual.

For instance, order ID 237160, has seven items and this counts as seven online order instead of one. What I tried to do- was to insert another column using vlookup from 'Order source' worksheet to make a pivot table and I get inflated counts.

I hope some experienced member could help me please.

Why the forum is not allowing me to upload the file.

I've got an excel application which on opening shows an message box
compiletime error 1004:application or object defined error when I click
ok the whole application is closed not allowing me to view the vba code
.It also closes other workbooks which are open .kindly suggest a soln.

We work on Excel files that link to several datasource files (100+) and when
I try to view the links via Data -> Edit Links, it pops up an "Edit Links"
window that spans the length of the Excel screen and shows a list of only
about half of my links. The window does not have a scroll bar which does not
allow me to see the rest of the list. Also, it does not allow me to shrink
the "Edit Links" window either. I have fiddled with the monitor resolution
and it does not seem to make a difference. (I checked on the previous Excel
and it allowed me to see all the links within a smaller window by scrolling
down.) Is anyone else running into the same problem?

If there is a setting solution to this, please advise me on how to fix it.
Thank you.

Hi,

I have an excel document that will be maintained by one or two users but need other users to have access to read only and use auto-filter. There needs to be restrictions for the users maintaining the spreadsheet so it has data validation. This seems to prevent me from publishing the page to the web as saving as a web page does not seem to support data validation.

I am therefore going to allow users to open the file from a network drive. i have locked down the cells and only allow users to select cells and use autofilter. The problem is that, although general users cannot change anything in the cells, they can still use autofilter and save the file which means the next person opening it is seeing a filtered view without realising it.

How can I prevent people from saving the file?

I have a very large Excel Workbook that recently will not allow me to calculate without giving me the message: "Miscrosoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close" I then closes the document. I am obviously not able to do any work on it. Is there an obvious thing I am overlooking? Where do I start in analyzing this problem?

Notes:

- I recently updated from Office 2003 to Office 2007 It has worked fine for a few weeks.
- I have a huge amount of code in this workbook
- It happens only when I calculate
- If I try to open a recovered version, it gives me an error saying "file format is not valid"

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Black Background is much better for the user's eyes than white, therefore I
believe there should be an option to change the background color of Excel
Sheets without the need to change the color of cells OR insert background
pictures, simply going to tools, options and change background color.

This option, should also automaticaly change the text color to white.

I just recently upgraded Office to 2003. Excel is acting weird! When I am
trying to AutoFormat cells Excel is not letting me celect all the cells in my
worksheet. It either goes horizontally, or vertically, but not both. Where do
I uncheck the restrictions?
Thanks, Alina D.

Hi,

I'm using Excel 2000. I have a huge excel file of over 4MB in size with
links to other files. When I'm trying to open this file, it shows the prompt
- to select "Yes" or "No" - for whether I want to update the links or not. As
soon as , I click Yes or No, it shows an error message that "Excel caused
some error and closing the program". I'd faced similar issues earlier
sometime back and sought help here. At that time, the file was without links
to other files and on opening there was no prompt like this time. That time,
I was advised to save the file as Microsoft Excel 95 and it worked. However,
this time, it is not allowing me to save that file as Microsoft 95 as be
default that prompt pops up and I can't proceed further unless I click Yes or
No. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Manish Bajpai

I updated a workbook that is becoming widely distributed. I have tried to
keep it running on Office 97 computers but this latest problem has me
stumped. On computers with Office 97, Excel will not allow me to open the
module to trace the offending code. I added " If Val (Application.Version) >
8 Then... " to try and trap the recently added lines. Didn't help.
The added lines that I thought were causing this are:
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
..
..
and Application.DisplayAlerts = True

I don't think these are causing the problem anymore.
Is there a way to decompile an Excel file so that I might be able to again
open the file with 97 ? I really need to be able to trace the logic.
The program only fails when one macro is called. The rest of the program
works fine.

I am trying to access my own documents on my own computer and I am being
blocked by an "Information Rights Management" notice. It is not allowing me
to look at my Word or Excel documents to re-format them.

I do NOT understand the jargon-laden message that appears.

HELP!

I have an Excel 2003 file that already contains some macros on the network. Employees in this office or on the road can open the file, fill in information, print the schedule, and save the updated file to their directory, laptop, etc.

I want to prevent any one from open any version of the file (regardless whether it is the original on the network or a copy they saved to their laptop) if they access the file after a certain date (which I can hardcode in VBA). I guess I should build in an override/password that would allow me to open the file after the certain date.

I don't know if some version of Protection, like which is available in Excel, will work.

I think the logic for the VBA code should go something like this:

On file open
If Today is >= LockDownDate Then input box to ask user for Password
If Password LockDownPassword Then close file
End

I am very new to VBA so if you respond, please be specific.

Thank you.
