Opening Word Template(.dot) with Excel VBA - RUNTIME ERROR

Hey,

I am trying to open a .dot file using a macro in Excel 2007.

Check out Microsoft's website for an example.

Dim wdApp As Word.Application
Dim wdDoc As Word.Document

'open word doc
OpenWordDoc wdApp, wdDoc

Sub OpenWordDoc(wdApp, wdDoc)
'In order to use this code you must set a reference to the
'Word object library by doing this. In the VB Editor click
'Tools, References. Then search for Microsoft Word n.n Object Library
'where n.n will depend on your version of Word.

On Error Resume Next
Set wdApp = GetObject(, "Word.Application")
If Err.Number <> 0 Then 'Word isn't already running
Set wdApp = CreateObject("Word.Application")
End If
On Error GoTo 0

Set wdDoc = wdApp.Documents.Open("C:Documents and SettingsjoeDesktoptemplate.dot")

wdApp.Visible = True

'You can now do whatever you like with the Word document e.g.

'wdDoc.PrintOut
'wdDoc.SaveAs "C:temphello.doc"
'wdDoc.Activate
'etc

End Sub

The code breaks at:

I get the following error:
Run-time error '-2147023170 (8007J6be)':

Automation error
The remote procedure call failed.

I believe the code works fine in 2003, but not in 2007.

In order to get it to work, I need to open the template.dot file first and then run the macro.

I'm using the following references:
- Visual Basic For Applications
- Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Library
- OLE Automation
- Microsoft Office 12.0 Object Library
- Microsoft Forms 2.0 Object Library
- Microsoft Word 12.0 Object Library

Any ideas?

Hi

Can anyone explain why I get a Excel VBA Runtime error 1004 "Select method of Range class failed" when I run the code below? Every time it runs it stops on the line shaded red below.

IAPLUS =
Workbooks("New Members.xls")

Set IAPLUSSht = IAPLUS.Sheets("Sheet1")

IAPLUS.Activate

IAPLUSSht.Select

Range("A:A").Select

Selection.AutoFilter

ActiveSheet.Range("$A$1").AutoFilter Field:=1, Criteria1:="=B120", Operator:=xlAnd

 Range("a1").Select
The only thing I can think of as to why it is causing an error is the range it is selecting has a frozen pane on the top row, would this cause a problem? I have tried changing it to A1:A10000 but it still produces an error. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Jeskit

Declare wordDot as document, open it as template.
Look at below code.
Btw, are you sure to open as template ??

Dim wordApp As Word.Application
Dim wordDot As Word.Document
Dim sPath As String
Set wordApp = New Word.Application
sPath = "NetworkProductsClientsOrders.dot"
On Error Resume Next

With wordApp
.Visible = True
Set wordDot = _
.Documents.Open(FileName:=sPath, _ &
ReadOnly:=False, Format:=wdFormatTemplate)

Check if a Word File is Open and If Open Close it with Excel VBA.

Dear Forum,

I want to close a Word File from Excel with the help of a MAcro/VBA if its already open and if its not open then just leave at that,

Please help me with a code.

Warm regards
e4excel

I've got a .dot file (Word template). I understand that there may be a way to bring that template into Excel and use it there. Anyone know how?

Dear all,

I have an Excel-workbook were I do alot of calculating, creating tables and graphs.
These elements are linked into word-template. The document contains more than
70 pages.

I use Office 2007.

After I linked in all the data from Excel, the paths (to the Excel-workbook) in the word-template has become physical links.
I have the workbook and the template in the same folder. But if I move these two
til another location, the template try to get data from the workbook located were
the physical address point to.

Is there an easy way to change the physical path to a virtual path?
The template has many paths to objects in the workbook.

The workbook and template will always be in the same folder.

Jørn

Opening an .xls file with Excel 2007 from Internet Explorer does not open it maximized

Hi there,

We are upgrading from Office 2003 to Office 2007. We have noticed that opening .xls documents with Excel 2007 from Internet Explorer does not open the document maximized within the Excel application window.

This is causing problems for our users because depending on how the window is displayed, the horizontal and vertical scrollbars are not shown against the edges of the Excel application window. As such, the only way to maximize the window is by double clicking on the document's title bar -- but most users would not be aware of this feature. Here is a screenshot of what I mean:

This problem does not occur with local files. In fact, while it may occur once with a local file, after maximizing the document window inside Excel and closing Excel, reopening the document causes Excel to remember that it was last maximized somehow and therefore displays it maximized.

We can reproduce the problem by opening any .xls from Internet Explorer 8 with Excel 2007 on Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x64 (running Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Services). E.g., here are a bunch of .xls files you can test with from Bing: http://www.bing.com/search?q=filetype%3Axls.

Has anyone got a solution to this?

Thanks.

Hi all,

Does anybody have examples of using the Bloomberg API with Excel VBA?

Or any other examples of "real time" systems built using Excel VBA?

Alternatively, can any of the professionals give me some advice about
the way in which Excel development takes place in Investment banks?

I have never worked in this sector and was curious about how the nature
of projects differ, from other sectors I have worked in.

Please advise,

Many thanks for your help in advance,

Hello, all,
Can you provide an example to illustrate how to connect sybase DB
with excel vba. I'll appreicate any reply for this thread.

Thanks.

How to Query (SQL Statement) a Date Criteria or Condition on where clause in a Trx table (Dbf Foxpro) with Excel VBA, please..

my trx table have a datetrx field with format mm/dd/yy, but on my PC the date format is dd/mm/yy.

I created some charts in a sheet (Sheet1) and when I mannualy replicate them in another sheet (Sheet2), its chart`s title cell reference does not change. It remains pointing to the cell reference in Sheet1. In Excel 2003 it is working fine, but it is not working in Excel 2007, seems there is a bug.
The charts titles are using a cell to pick up the title value. I use the = (equal sign) pointing to the cell with the title. When I duplicate the Sheet1 (with Move or Copy) the chart titles sheet reference is not changed. For example I have the Sheet1 with charts pointing to cell D2, this is what is in the chart title: =Sheet1!$D$2. When I replicate the Sheet1, the charts title on Sheet2 are not updated with =Sheet2!$D$2, instead, it still remains with Sheet1 reference: =Sheet1!$D$2.
I tried to go to Find & Select, and clicking on Replace but did not work.
Is there a way to change all the charts title at once with Excel VBA? Actually the only thing I need to change is the Sheet name in the formula for all the charts, I have more than 20 charts. So instead of using =Sheet1!$D$2, =Sheet1!$D$3, =Sheet1!$D$4, and so on, change all the sheets to Sheet2 (=Sheet2!$D$2, =Sheet2!$D$3, =Sheet2!$D$4).
Can anyone help me, please?.

Thanks!

I am receiving a runtime error 424.. After I step through it occurs after I set my range and the if statement.

How can I open a word document from within excel with VBA and minimize the
document.

I am trying to insert a hyperlink into excel to a word template so it opens as a .doc file. When I try to insert it, it only allows me to hyperlink to the template file. I have read all over the forums and no one seems to know how to do it, even with a macro. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

I am trying to write some code to open word from excel and then paste in the contents of the excel spreadsheet into word. I have used the following code:

Dim wrdApp As Word.Application

This is returning the following error:

Compile error:
user defined type not defined.

Could someone help with this please?

Regards,

Tim

Okay, my tool goes a little something like this:

In Excel, it creates an entryform where data is entered into various combobox and text fields.

The tool then opens Word, loads a pre-made template file with pre-defined bookmarks, then inserts the data from the entryform into those bookmarks.

My previous version used the insertion bookmarks and worked fine for when I was simply entering the data from the entryform at those points.

But for the next version, I need to insert the data INTO those bookmarks (ie a fillable form) so that I can then recall the data from the Word file back into the Excel tool.

Make sense so far?

Using my old code doesn't work. I receive an error message: Run-time error '438': Object doesn't support this property or method.

I've tried all sorts of combinations of code to get this to work and still not getting it right. Clearly, I'm not understanding the error message.

My code looks a little something like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'
' Open the Word Program and load the TcubedCVR-newertoolform.dot template.
'
Set wrd = CreateObject("Word.application")
wrd.Visible = True
Set CVR = wrd.documents.Add("TcubedCVR-newertoolform.dot")
CVR.Protect Type:=2, Password:="12345"
'
' Store form fields into Word bookmarks
'
CVR.Bookmarks("TcubedTchr").Text = TcubedTchr
CVR.Bookmarks("School").Range = School
CVR.Bookmarks("VisitDate").Range.Text = Date
CVR.Bookmarks("VisitTime").Range.Text = Time
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You might ask yourself why am I protecting the document. Well, if I don't the text inserted replaces the bookmark. But when I protect it so that the file is a fillable form, I can manually insert text/data into the bookmarks without losing them. So I'm trying to automate that process by having the tool insert into the bookmarks the data from the fields.

Any help is appreciated! Muchos Danke!!

I have a word template that I open (as a new document) with excel VBA.
This template has bookmarks in it and I can copy and paste text or cell values from excel to the template to fill it out automatically. The one area I am having problems is in trying to create an email hyperlink in one of my bookmarks.

Does anybody have any suggestions?
Here is an example of the code I am using that does not work correctly:
Sub Hyperlink()
Dim wb As Excel.Workbook
Dim wdApp As Word.Application
Dim myDoc As Word.Document
Dim LinkName As String
Dim LinkAddress As String
Dim SPE, SCM, Purch, SQE, Vendor, Veri As Boolean

Set wb = ActiveWorkbook
Path = wb.Path & "Test.dotm"
'On Error GoTo ErrorHandler

'Create a new Word Session
Set wdApp = CreateObject("Word.Application")

'Open document in word
Set myDoc = wdApp.Documents.Add(Path)

'Activate word and display document
  With wdApp
    .Visible = True
    .ActiveWindow.WindowState = 0
    .Activate
  End With

LinkName = "Name Here"
LinkAddress = "Email@Address.com"
  With myDoc.Bookmarks
    .Item("Bookmark2").Range.InsertBefore LinkName
    .Item("Bookmark2").Select
    With Selection
      .Hyperlinks.Add Anchor:=Selection.Range, Address:="Mailto:%20" & _
      LinkAddress, SubAddress:="", ScreenTip:="", TextToDisplay:=LinkName, Target:=""
    End With
  End With
End Sub
I have tried several variations on this and cannot seem to get it to work. I can paste the "LinkName" to the bookmark and select the bookmark just fine, but I cant get the hyperlink to attach.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I am using Office 2007 for this project. The Macro starts and runs in excel which then opens the word document. I wasn't sure if any of that was clear or not.

I have an Excel spreadsheet which will be used to create a Word document from
a template. I can open the template and save it as a document. However I
also want to be able to run an auto open macro contained in the template when
it opens, but it is opening with macros disabled. Even if I try to open a
template containing macros manually within Word, it does not offer the option
of enabling macros. Is this a security feature?

I would be grateful if someone could confirm whether it is possible to
enable macros in this situation, and if so how.

I am using this code (gleaned from earlier posts) :

Sub OpenTemplate()
Dim WordApp As Word.Application
Dim WordDoc As Word.Document
Dim wordRng As Word.Range
Dim WordPara As Word.Paragraph

On Error Resume Next
Set WordApp = GetObject(, "Word.Application")
If Err.Number <> 0 Then 'Word isn't already running
Set WordApp = CreateObject("Word.Application")
End If
On Error GoTo 0
WordApp.Visible = True
With WordApp

Documents.Add Template:= _
"C:Documents and Settings.... myfile.dot", _
NewTemplate:=False, DocumentType:=0 ',

Set WordDoc = WordApp.ActiveDocument
.ActiveDocument.SaveAs "C:Documents and Settings...testsave01.doc"""

End With

Set WordDoc = Nothing
Set WordApp = Nothing

End Sub

I am very experienced with Access (still using DAO though) and VBA inside of Access (built some nice applications using these). I also have familiarity with ASP coding using ADO connections (so I am familiar with ADO too, but not with Access).

Anyway, I have a scenario where I need to siphon in a text file (fixed width format), which contains product information. There are 480 of these files, each containing anywhere from 10 to 10,000 items (one item per line - normal sort of thing).

Well, I was going to do this in Access 2000 (which is the platform we use, Office 2000), but it coughs no matter what I do. Even Excel coughed until I simply renamed the file to ".txt" instead of how they come (as a ".upc"). Anyway, after a bunch of grunt work (because the fixed width file format document was not correct, off by a character here and there), I created an Excel Template file, which works great to open up any of the 480 ".upc" files, so that is working.

However, now I need to automate this process, to turn all of these ".upc" fixed width formatted files, into Excel 2000 spreadsheets, so that my Access program can import them. This is where I have the problem, I am not familiar with Excel VBA (and I am surprised it seems so foreign to me, as I know Access VBA very well).

I recorded a Macro, and here is the code it generated:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Workbooks.Open Filename:= _
"E:Work_FoldersCISCustom_Software_DevelopmentSeneca_OpticalSpexUPC_TestUPC.XLT" _
, Editable:=True
ChDir "E:Work_FoldersCISCustom_Software_DevelopmentSeneca_OpticalSpexUPC"
ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs Filename:= _
"E:Work_FoldersCISCustom_Software_DevelopmentSeneca_OpticalSpexUPCb0028.UPC.xls" _
, FileFormat:=xlNormal, Password:="", WriteResPassword:="", _
ReadOnlyRecommended:=False, CreateBackup:=False

ActiveWorkbook.Close
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to do three things, and a point in the right direction should be all that is needed (and MUCH appreciated).

1) I want to make the path relative, as this spreadsheet will be in the same folder as the Excel template ("upc.xlt"), and the folder with the data files is only down one level and in the "SpexUPC" folder. (I tried turning these into standard relative, such as "UPC.XLT" and then "..SpexUPC" for the change directory command.

2) I want to open, in order (alpha order as listed in the folder I guess, but however), the ".upc" file into the "upc.xlt" template and then save as the upc data file's name, but then a ".xls" at the end. (Thus, "b0028.UPC" would become "b0028.UPC.xls")

3) Finally, I want to automate this process (in a loop) to process all the ".upc" files in the "SpexUPC" folder.

Fairly simple...

Then in my Access program I will be automating siphoning these Excel spreadhseets into Tables. And then continuing the process for this program (an inventory management program).

A little help from a fellow programmer would be awesome!!! Some direction, links to articles relating to such (with VBA code examples, I learn best with examples).

Thanks in advance,

Colin

Hello,

I am working on a project where I am creating analysis using a subroutine in excel/vba and I would like to have the subroutine generate a report that is a word document. I have never used excel/vba to create and modify a word document and don't know how to approach it. I imagine that I will have a template.doc that I can access and save as another file. Does anyone have an example of creating and modify a word document in this manner. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to have a macro that opens a Word Template as a new document (as it normally would open if a user ran the template) - instead of just opening the .dot template file itself - I just don't want the user to be able to save over the actual template, but I still want them to have access to the format/style/layout of the file.

Currently using (which opens the .dot fine):
Code:
Dim appWD As Object
Set appWD = CreateObject("Word.Application")
appWD.Visible = True
appWD.Documents.Open FileName:="P:dirfile-template.dot"
Thanks for any help

Hi,

I have following problem. I've programmed an application for a customer in
EXCEL-VBA with several text-file outputs.

The source-code is as below:

Public Sub StartSeiteErstellen()

Dim fileNr

mDateiName = Pfad_AktKatalog & "Katalog.htm"

mstrHTML_Kopf1 = Range("HTML_StartSeite_Kopf").Value

mstrHTML_Kopf1 = mstrHTML_Kopf1 & Range("HTML_StartSeite_Body").Value

mstrHTML_Kopf1 = mstrHTML_Kopf1 & Range("HTML_StartSeite_Fuß").Value

mstrHTML_Kopf1 = fVariablenErsetzen(mstrHTML_Kopf1)

' Datei-Ausgeben:

fileNr = FreeFile

Open mDateiName For Output As fileNr

Print #fileNr, mstrHTML_Kopf1

Close #fileNr

Exit Sub

The variable " Pfad_AktKatalog " is beeing valued (filled) by a cell of an
worksheet.

I developed this application with Excel 2000 (without any SP) and the
customer uses Excel as well.

Up to now everything went right, until the customer istalled Office-SP3 and
got, while executing the OPEN, the " ERROR 53 - File not Found "

The most curious thing is, that when I use the Excel-File from the customer
( where he only changed the output paths within the Worksheet )on my PC, I
also get the same error message ! The program itself runs on 90% of the PCs
we tested, but on a few with the Office SP3.

Does anybody know about this bug, can anybody help in this matter ?

One thing more, please don't joke with changing on "Filesystem Object".

Thanks in advance.

PLEASE HELP ME
i have macro like this below which includes records from excel to word
template, but I'd like to convert it in such way, that it includes
records from excel to one word document (It is preparing one word
document now for every record from excel). It should works like that:
excel opens word template and inludes every record from excel to
bookmarks in word template and then it saves document. Are You able to
convert this macro below?

I do not know if this is actually possible but...

I want the ability to open a word document from inside my excel spreadsheet. More specifically, I want a button (or something) that will run a macro that will open a word template (from g:templates) and then save it to a new location (same folder as the excel spreadsheet--this changes though for example: g:filesSmith-123 or g:filesJones-321).

Thank you in advance for any help, even if it's to tell me this is not possible.

No luck finding an answer? You could always try Google.
