Shared Excel Files on Network Drive

I get the following error when saving files on network drive.

File is Locked. In order to save changes to the file, you can either close
the file before making any changes and then re-open it, use Save As (File
menu) to save the file using another filename, or turn off Shared Workbooks
and then save the file.

User open excel file on network drive and then she save and close. She open
this file again but it alert "read-only and this file open by she". I see
session open file on server and found that this file opening, actually this
file closed. I go to user desktop and open task manager and see execl task
still running. How to fix this problem?

I tried to open an excel file on network drive, it says "XXX.xls is locked
for editing by abcd", then with options to open "read only", "notify" or
cancel.
obviously, even that person said to lock also can't open.
I can open readonly and save as new file, however, I can't move or delete
old file.
Any idea what went wrong.
I googled it, it seems to be problem with file server.

thank you.

Sharing excel file over network for use by multiple persons. File has suddenly stopped opening giving message "File cannot be found" etc.... I back the file up daily to my hard drive so thankfully didn't lose much.
This is the second time this has happened. File size is only 300Kb. Any ideas why this is happening? Can't do anything with the network file at the minute.

Excel seems to be creating temp files to the same folder, then gave a message saying changes could not be saved to the excel file.

Ran the corruption program from this site, it could not open the file.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated

Hello,

We're having a weird issue with one of our shares on our server. We
have a share (servershare) and within this share we have multiple
folders with subfolders and whatnot but this is the primary share that
is mapped to all our users via login script. Within some of the
subfolders within this share there are excel files. What's happening is
that for some reason, we'er getting a lot of .xar and .tmp files appear
in the root of the share (servershare) even though there are no
Excel files on the root of the share, the only objects there are
folders with subfolders. I know that .xar files have to do with Excel
and its autorecovery feature, but why would these files show up in the
root of the share and not the subfolder where the Excel files are
located? any info would be great!

I would like to shae, edit, and save an Excel file on the internet for my
small business. We don't have a network for our remote offices, so we need
to use the internet. Yahoo Briefcase, and google doc.'s have already been
explored and they aren't going to perform how we need them to.

I'm interested in posting an excel file on my Yahoo group site that allows
for members to enter into the file (preferred is for a protected book that
they enter from pull down lists in unprotected areas so that no cell edits
are made apart from the entry) and have it update and save the results.
Having 50 or so people enter their own data into a shared file is more
efficient than multiple cut and paste tasks for one person. Can this be done?
What is the procedure and how will it work? can it be done on a third party
server site like Yahoo! or do I have to set up my own server site and run
special software to do this? Thanks - Dave

excel share file problem on server 2003

2 user use different office version. One are using excel 2003 , and other one are using excel 2007.When they open a same excel file on network drive together , sometimes it will not prompt read only. Both can modify the excel. Anyone see it before? How to fix it?Thanks!! john

I recently bought a Buffalo network drive so I can access my files from both
my laptop and desktop. This works perfect for my Word documents and even my
Outlook PST. The problem is when I try to save an Excel (2003) file to the
network drive I get a message like

File xxx.Xls is possibly changed by an other user since you last saved it,
do you want to overwrite it or to save with another name.

(My Office version is not in English so this is my translation of the
message)

This only happens if I open an existing file, it happens even after I try to
save it immediately after opening. I can overwrite it so the file is not
locked (what would surprise me because there nobody else on the network)

It happens when saving files on both desktop or laptop.

The only way I found so bypass this message is to make every workbook shared
but that way I loos functionality.

I there a way to be able to save Excel files to a network drive without make
the Work book shared?

Thanks

PS. I'm using Win Xp Pro on Desktop and laptop

On trying to open a file in XL2000 from a mapped network drive the following error message appears:

"Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space."

Neither memory or disk space are a real problem.

Other Office programs (Word etc.) will open files from the network drive without a problem.

The current workround is to transfer files to/from the hard drive before opening or saving.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Hello,

I have a excel file that makes a report out of many other excel files
according to the right parameters. They all are located on a network
drive, in a same folder. It's working when started in the folder
directly, but the main file must got to the intranet and work in a
brouser.
And it's not working there. Can anyone give me some info about that
matter, or should I consult my local admin about the ways our network
works etc.

Br,

Hi everyone,

I have searched the forum but have found no answer to what I am trying to do.

This is the situation:
I have an excel (1) on a network drive which uses a makro to collect data from other excel files (2) on that same network drive. Each user has their own excel (1), but the other excels (2) include confidential information that the users should not be able to see. So excel (1) pulls the information relevant to the single user from the other excels (2).

How can I hide/protect/make invisible the other excel files (2) while the makro from file (1) is still able to pull the data from it?

I have tried hiding excel files (2), then the makro doesn't work anymore. Maybe there's a way to write the "also include hidden foldes and files" into the makro?

I have also tried revoking the permission on the folders containing the other excel files (2), but then the makro won't work, either.

Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this?

Best regards and thanks in advance!
Tina

HI Guys, Just wondering if it possible for me to click a button on a userform on one pc the will open an excel file on another PC on the same network. I have the network address for the second computer. Many thanks

I have an excel file with a userform which is used to input data.

Whenever the userform is initialized, a sr No(In a textbox) is automatically generated based on the max value in column A.The user then enter other data as per the fields in the userform.

When the submit(Command button) is pressed the data is enter in an excel sheet of the same workbook.

I want to share this workbook over my LAN and allow different users to edit at the same time.

The problem is when two users are accessing the workbook at the same time, the Sr No generated is same for both of them.

Now when user 1 saves the file the data is recorded in the worksheet, but when user 2 saves the file, the data gets overwritten and only what user 2 has recorded gets saved.

How to overcome this problem.

Workbook Attached.

Dear All Excel Experts,

I hv this problem in opening shared Excel files in a LAN network environment even though no one is accessing it. Error message received is "File is being modified by another user. It will be opened as 'Read-Only' " .Then there is options for user to click on "Read-only", "Notify" and "Cancel". Click on "Notify" has no effect.

What could be the problem and how do I rectify this?

Thanks

Mok

Scenario: We are creating a database of parts using Microsoft Excel 2010 on a laptop (RACPULT) which is not hooked up to the company network. The company network has 1 server and 7 clients. The server is running Microsoft Excel 2003 and only 2 clients have Microsoft Excel 2010 and the other 5 clients have Microsoft Excel 2003. When we update the server with the SLS MDB.xlsx, we make 2 versions; 1 Excel 2003 version & 1 Excel 2010 version to accommodate all clients. The SLS MDB.xlsx contains hyperlinks that link to pictures (pdf files).

Problem 1: When we update the SLS MDB.xlsx we have to replace/destroy the old file.

Problem 2: We have to keep the file the same name (SLS MDB.xlsx) in order to keep the links connected or else they become broken.

Problem 3: When we update the server, we have to have all clients close SLSMDB.xlsx (both versions) file so we can update.

Question 1: Is there any way were we can update the SLSMDB.xlsx (both versions) without disrupting the clients who have either SLSMDB.xlsx versions open on the network?

Question 2: Should we update all clients and server to Micorsoft Excel 2010 and if so, will we still run into our update problem of having everyone shut down.

Question 3: Is there any way to update the server without having to replace/destroy old file.

Currently I have two WinXP Prof machines that are doing the same thing. The curious thing is it is using two different platforms of MS Office; one is XP Prof. and one is 2003 Prof. An earlier version (2000 Prof) has no problem with opening files from network drives.

When either of these computers opens a file from a network drive, it comes up empty; no data being shown. Though when I try to close the Excel application it asks for me to save the file. I can copy the file from the network drive to the local computer and it opens normally. I have tried online help, and other threads to find someone with the same issue. I know it is probably something that I do not have setup properly , so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have an 8 meg excel file that needs to be shared with a whole team who
connects to our web site with a very slow connection. Is there a way to
"run" an Excel file on a server, so that the user is actually only loading
the "tab" that they are using vs. loading the entire file everytime they want
to look one thing up.

This Excel file is updated regularily. Sadly, it won't work to just
distribute it on CDs.

Thanks in advance!

Jon

Is it possible to save a speadsheet that was opened on the web to the web?
When I open an Excel file from the web, I only get the "save as" option. this
is fine when I want to save the file locally. But, I would like others to see
and work with the changed speadsheet on the internet.

I have try to publish the Excel file as a web page allowing interactivity,
but does not seem to keep the changes either.

In a nutshell: I wish to be able open and save Excel files on the web as if
they were on a network server. Where multiple users can open, modify, and
save. Is this possible?

Thanks,

When I open a word or excel file on network (mapping drive), when I
tried to Save As a new file (On network drive as well), the errors
occur.
Any one know what the error means?

We have an SBS 2003 server which contains all data. Have recently upgraded
users from various Office versions to 2007. Now when a user opens a shared
excel document on the server he/she receives a note that the user name of the
person with the open file is "" and not details of the user.

I am working on a shared Excel file. There are 4 users accessing it. There
are comment boxes for almost every cell. Certain comments are getting deleted
by itself. Is there a limitation on the no. of comments in a file/worksheet?

No luck finding an answer? You could always try Google.
